Mrs. Bernice was the owner and operator of Bernice's Sandwich Shop from 1976 until 1997 when her son Dwayne and wife Angela took over and operates till today. She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters for 35 years, Legion of Mary and the Silver Society. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, making her family her priority.  Every holiday was her favorite, because it meant that she could cook and celebrate with all her family. She was very meticulous about having things just right for that particular holiday.  It brought her much joy to have everyone under her roof; eating, laughing, loving and having a good time. Bernice had 16 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She had the ability to touch each and every one of them in a special way. She often fed Lt. Governor Bobby Freeman on his stops through Bunkie in the 80s. She was featured in Louisiana life magazine for great spots for eating on the road. Her Son Dwayne is still putting out those tasty toasted sandwiches. Stop and visit Bernice’s sandwich shop in Bunkie when you're passing through.
